Mark Robins aims this honest criticism at Coventry City after Fleetwood collapse

Mark Robins criticised his defence for the way they allowed an experienced Fleetwood Town to overpower his Coventry City side in the space of 20 second half minutes at the Highbury Stadium.

The Sky Blues had been well in the game in the first half when both keepers made saves, but Joey Barton’s men took control after the break to send the hardcore 421 travelling fans home disappointed.

Asked for his thoughts on the 3-0 defeat, Robins said: “First half OK, second half not so OK.

“Looking at it without seeing anything back, we had some good chances and their keeper has had man of the match and that tells its own story.

“What it looked like tonight is exactly what it is. They looked like a group of experienced players who have gone, ‘we could get beat here and we don’t want to get beat here,’ and stepped on it and decided that they are going to have a go.

“What we didn’t do is didn’t defend properly and we didn’t use the ball properly.

“You look at them and the way they set up and come after you – Paddy Madden and Ched Evans are top strikers in the division.

“Evans had a header that Burge saved in the first half and then got his goal but, apart from that, not a great deal but they started to come into it more in the second half.

“But I thought we edged it, more than edged it in the first half. We were passing the ball better and moving forward pretty well and having good opportunities in good areas but, again, taking the wrong decisions and options.

“We know what we have got and know what we have got in terms of the quality of the players, and generally they are good enough. But tonight the second half was less than good and defensively we were very poor.”

Looking at the goals, scored in the 53rd, 71st and 73rd minutes, he said: “Jordan Willis came out in the second half and looked injured and his knee was obviously sore, to the point where he had to come off. And as he’s doing that we concede the first goal. We were out of position and there wasn’t a great deal of movement in terms of trying to stop that one.

“Jordy Hiwula has not moved his body and there is no pressure on the ball and they get the ball out to Marney who has blasted one into the net.

“The second one is the same, it’s poor, poor defensively. What you don’t do is give the jerseys away, you don’t sell the jerseys when you are a goal down. You try to stay in it and get back i n the game and try to build the pressure again.

“But we didn’t do that and came out of the slot, one ball through broke us down and we didn’t defend it right so within two moments we were two goals down and then they added a third.”
