New Canaan hangs on to upset top-seeded Shelton in a shootout

SHELTON — Making its first appearance in the Class LL tournament, No. 8 New Canaan made an eye-opening first-impression, upsetting top-seeded Shelton 42-34 on Tuesday night at Finn Stadium.

New Canaan — the preseason No. 1 in the GameTimeCT poll — scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to before holding off a furious rally by the hosts. New Canaan will visit Fairfield Prep in Sunday’s semifinals.

New Canaan quarterback Drew Pyne completed 22-of-29 passes for 217 yards and three touchdowns, while also leading the Rams in rushing with 93 yards a touchdown.

Shelton quarterback Jake Roberts threw for 171 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for 93 yards and two scores.
